English Original
"What left this sharp ridge?" Vera ran her thumb along the pine block clamped at the dust-clearing area. Grant, near the oil-finishing shelf, compared measurements on a fresh beam and nodded without looking up. An amber lamp hung from a thin pulley over the bench, its rope quiet except for an occasional sway. Vera’s aim was simple: smooth every face before evening. She began with a coarse strip, the grating stroke sending warm flecks toward a ceramic mug that held her brush. The strip’s rough edge cut deeper than planned and tore away, leaving ragged scratches. She tugged at the block, hoping to flip it, but the vice kept slipping; a knot in the wood pushed against the jaws like a tiny wedge. If the clamp moved again, the block would spin and rewind her progress.
A breeze slid through the patio and pulled a folded blanket from the back of a stool. It landed in a soft heap, the woven image of a bright-eyed mongoose now facing the workbench. The sudden drop startled Vera, and her elbow grazed the pegboard. Strips of sandpaper hung there in tidy hierarchy, numbers growing smaller toward the finest grit. The accidental bump revealed the discarded coarse piece on the mat. Its torn corner still felt like dried riverbed. Vera pinched it, noticing how its stiffness resisted bending. She folded the strip twice and pressed it between the pine knot and the metal jaw. The gritty surface bit into both wood and steel; the block stopped wobbling at once. With the piece now acting as a silent shim, she moved on, brushing away sawdust in slow, even clouds. Each pass of medium grit turned the dull grey to honey gold, and the knot no longer caught her stroke.
By evening, the bench lamp burned lower. Fine powder ringed the vice, and the folded sandpaper wedge remained wedged, holding everything in place. Light from the pulley lamp slid across the square faces, showing parallel lines where new oil would soon darken the grain. Outside the empty patio, the mongoose blanket lay untouched beside the stool, its colors dimmed under the cooling glow.
