English Original
A spool of silver ribbon, a stack of frost-white pastry boxes, and a small dashpot gleaming beside the lid press lined the packaging table. Opal lifted the first box, tucked two blueberry swirls inside, and slid it under the press; the dashpot eased the lid down with a faint sigh. She aimed to make the package look festive, so she crossed a length of ribbon over the pale surface and tied a quick knot. The knot held, yet the loose ends floated across the fluorescent cast of the counter, and the bow looked thin against the generous pastries. Her fingers tapped the table, then reached for an extra strip of navy cord waiting near the scissors.
Opal wrapped the second ribbon at a diagonal, letting it intertwine with the first until a braided pattern appeared across the blue-grey lid. She pressed her lips, then added a third layer—thin metallic thread that shimmered like rain against slate pavement. The three layers pressed into one ballast; when she tried to lower the lid again, it refused to close, caught beneath a multitude of tight loops. Light from the display lamps bounced off the weaving and sent a sharp signal toward the shop’s window cage. The resident parakeet jerked upright, shook its wings, and performed a startled dash along the perch. Wind from the bird’s feathers upset a paper cup of seeds; kernels rattled onto the tiles, rolling toward the doorway. Outside, four sparrows spotted the spill, hopped through the gap, and scattered between customers’ shoes.
The tiny birds pecked and fluttered, their wings brushing trouser legs and knocking a menu board sideways. Opal’s shoulders rose near her ears; she slid the box back, pinched the middle navy cord, and tugged. The braid loosened at once, the reflective surface dimmed, and the parakeet settled into stillness. Without the bright flash, the sparrows lost interest and glided out over the entrance mat. Seeds remained where they had fallen, but no new ones poured from the upright cup. Opal trimmed the single silver bow, pressed the lid again, and eased the finished parcel onto the collection shelf. A last seed continued to spin in a shallow groove between two blue-grey tiles, tracing a slow circle as footsteps passed around it.
Translation
