English Original
A narrow gap showed on the ribbon rack where the thin violet spool usually hung beside the scissors. Seth leaned closer, hoping to check the floor, but only hushed ventilator breath slid beneath the counter. He had promised to wrap up a bouquet of white lilac before the next bell on the entrance door rang again. The shelves were being misted by tiny nozzles, and each burst hissed like a distant cymbal. While he arranged the stems, a low buzz from the storage cooler marked the colder realm at the back. A striped shop cat slipped between buckets of oleander, its paws silent yet its collar giving a faint metallic jingle.
Seth reached for a replacement ribbon, found a pale spool, and pulled carefully; the strand twisted, then bunched against its own core. The drag produced a soft scrape that echoed off glass vases, but the knot refused to release. If the ribbon tightened again, he would lose more time. He tried easing tension by lifting the spool higher, and a slow flutter answered him as a few centimeters unwound before jamming once more. The cat sprang onto the wrapping table, landing with a gentle thud that shook the stacked tissue sheets; their edges rustled, and the vibration nudged the stubborn coil. Seth kept his grip steady, adjusted the angle of pull, and the ribbon slid another hand-span, though still uneven.
A sudden silence fell when the cooler motor paused mid-cycle, removing the background hum and letting the slightest whisper inside the tangled ribbon become audible. The cat pressed its nose against the spool, whiskers brushing the loop; that subtle push tipped the reel, loosening the final snag. Ribbon unfurled in a muted sweep across the board, and Seth wound it around the bouquet until green stems disappeared beneath neat spirals. He placed the finished bundle on the same rack that had been missing its color; the violet spool that had hung full earlier now showed cardboard through a half-used circle.
Translation
