The other swings hung quiet beneath amber noon light, but one seat sliced forward as Rosa pumped her legs. Eli paused beside the sandbox, waiting for his turn, the warm rubber surface springing gently under his sneakers. He uncapped a thrifty reused water bottle he had filled at the fountain. Small drops glittered like honey on the ochre sand. The wooden frame had been painted years ago with a peeling decal. It showed a bright wilderness river bordered by green pines. Eli wanted movement of his own. He pressed the bottle, pouring a thin stream into a trench carved with a green shovel. The water rolled forward, gathering loose grains that slipped down like tiny copper beads.

Wind skimmed over the sandbox and nudged the amber ribbon of water beyond the frame. The stream met a fallen chrysanthemum petal, lifted it, and carried both toward the rubber mat by the swings. If the stream touched the mat, it would creep under Rosa’s sneakers. Sand gathered against the grate, forming a puddle that slid closer to Rosa’s swinging toes. She spotted the shine, hopped off, and grabbed a narrow plank resting near the sandbox. Pressed into the sand, the plank formed a low ridge that turned the water back toward the grate. The ants and crumbs behind the ridge stayed dry while the redirected stream thinned. Eli crouched again, the bottle tilted above fresh sand, water streaming in a narrow amber arc toward the improvised ridge.
