Two bird shadows already fluttered across the white sheet when Dean pulled a cushion nearer to the sunlit window. Yvette crouched behind the fabric, her elbow braced on the warm sill while her wrist rotated, keeping the paper swan steady. Dean had rehearsed a chase scene during lunch, so he lifted his fox cut-out, aiming for the centre of the bright rectangle. The slope of sunlight across the sheet had already slipped rightward, so the fox landed in the margin and almost disappeared. On the audience side, a striped cat lay with paws stretched forward, tracking the moving shadows with slow head turns. He slid his knees forward to correct the angle, yet the shoebox rocked, and kitchenware silhouettes clinked against each other behind him. Among them lay a cardboard spoon; a stiff sprig of tarragon taped to it scratched lightly against the box wall.
A moment later, a pin pinged free at the corner. The sheet sagged toward their knees, creasing the swan's neck. Leander sat at the prop table, cutting a new turtle from the back of an old recipe card without breaking rhythm. Dean pressed his palm against the cool fabric, feeling the slack area loosen further whenever the breeze moved. Should the cloud slide over the sun too soon, the shadow stage would dim, and timing mattered more than force. He waited, muscles tight, until full light returned, then lifted the spoon with its fragrant twig to prop the sheet from behind. Its handle, long and flat, filled the gap the missing pin had left. The cloth now stayed high enough for his fox.
As the sunlight re-emerged, Dean glided the fox toward centre, matching Yvette's swan with an even rhythm. The spoon's weight kept the fabric firm, and the fox's outline finally stood sharp instead of drifting sideways. He had searched for another pin earlier. The improvised prop produced a cleaner outcome than metal and left only a slight ridge on the slope of the sill. Dean held the fox silhouette near the cloth while Yvette lifted a cardboard swan, their shadows dividing the glowing fabric between them. A faint draft curled across the window frame, and both cut-outs swayed apart by less than the width of a thumb.
Translation
