One clay bowl shone with a wet, pale-blue glaze, but the wooden plank beneath it sagged slightly under the morning heat. Vivian’s fingertips brushed the rim; the surface felt cool and almost oily, proof that the glaze had not yet hardened. Around her, the pottery stall pressed against passing shoulders, and every stack of bowls relied on a delicate balance of weight and space. She eased her choice toward the bubble-wrap station, yet the lone roll stuck against its cardboard core. Pulling harder loosened only a thin strip, and customers behind her began a slow circuit around the crates, trying not to frown upon her struggle. A striped cat crouched under the table, watching a bright butterfly that hovered just above the stone paving.
The rumble of a delivery cart cut through the lane. Vendors drew their displays inward, and Vivian stepped back to let the cart pass. By the time the wheels rattled away, the plank had shifted; bowls now leaned mouth to mouth like tilted coins. She reached again, and the first bowl tipped into a small terracotta cup. The cup rolled along the rough plank edge, struck a light bamboo fan, and the fan drifted down toward the cat. Startled, the cat bounded forward, arresting the roll but sending the butterfly spinning into the air. The moving air from the leap slowed the cup, yet another bowl started to slide. Blake, standing beside Vivian, slid a woven mat under the plank, raising one side just enough to stop further movement. A low, almost melancholy whistle escaped the bamboo fan as it settled flat, and clay surfaces clinked softly while gravity found a new agreement. Vivian was already sliding her palms around the still-turning cup at the plank’s edge, steel-steady eyes tracking its wobble.
