Suddenly, the cuckoo clock on the shelf proclaimed two o’clock, its wooden bird popping out with a hollow clatter. At the same instant, the doorbell chimed; an adult neighbour stepped in, waving a folded questionnaire from the community garden and asking for quick answers. The task felt like an unexpected inquiry, yet Reed followed the neighbour to the corridor, leaving the jar uncapped beside the open window where Lucia adjusted the blinds. A fresh gust of cool air slipped through the gap, brushing past the damp interior.
