Mint Across the Beetle’s Shell-

A crescent stain on the newspaper marked the spot where a drop of yellow paint had vanished overnight. A speckled beetle no larger than a lentil stepped from that empty patch, its shell giving off a faint mossy smell that mixed with the sugary scent of the thick paints. Tranquility hung over the kitchen; an adult hummed at the sink, letting the two children work. Emmet had been certain every well on the white tray was untouched, yet the insect now prowled through the glossy realm of colour, antennae dipping toward the red well and leaving the air tinged with a slight iron tang.
The beetle’s back carried a pale pink groove, an inscription at dawn, slender as pencil lead. Lily leaned closer; the craft stick in her hand released a milky, chalk-dust odour as she moved it. Blue paint clung to the wood, and a quiet dispute rose between blue and yellow when the stick slipped into the rinse cup, turning the water a murky teal that smelled like wet cardboard. If the water turned any darker, every new mix would lean muddy, so Lily exchanged the cup for a fresh jar that still smelled of cold tap metal. Yet another obstacle loomed: the yellow well had been drained almost to its base, a sticky rind that smelled sharp like citrus peel. The children wanted a gentle mint-green that matched the beetle’s shell; without enough yellow, the idea faltered.
Emmet tried a different path. He scraped a tiny curl of the remaining yellow, let it drop into an empty well, and thinned it with a single sweet-smelling bead of blue lifted from the primary source. The mix opened into a pale mint, the air now rich with a creamy aroma similar to cake icing. Tilting the beetle toward the overhead light reinterpreted the earlier surprise: that pink groove was not damage but a colour guide, a living inscription showing exactly where the green should sit beside a blush line. Emmet placed the stick beside the beetle, a tiny square of the new tone drying on its wing case. A ring of softened mint spread on the newspaper beneath the tray.
Translation
