English Original
Water dripped from Margot's sleeve as she lowered a soaked floral foam block onto the counter, while a second block still bobbed, only half-darkened, in a shallow tray. The tray’s rim felt sandy where dry stems had rubbed, and its base lacked enough cool water to draw the remaining air from the spongy green cube. Outside, clement afternoon air slipped through the open door and brushed the warmer wrapping station. Most of the tall lily bucket had been drained by customers during the morning rush, so every dip now mattered. For fairness, Margot and Ruby took turns with a metal dipper; each scoop splashed into the tray and raised the level by a few slow millimetres. After four scoops the block darkened further yet still floated, a teasing conundrum. They chose to hasten the work, aware that petals scattered along the counter would soften quickly if the block stayed above the surface.
Margot lifted the dipper again, but a jerk at her wrist spilled a cold sheet across the smooth counter. The thin run of water slid under a loose ribbon tail; the slick strand drifted forward and nudged a stack of wrapping tissue. The bottom sheet soaked up the spill, grew heavy, and dragged the whole pile against the tray. That new weight tipped one corner; water curved over the plastic lip, pattered onto the tiles, and streamed toward the cooler door. Ruby grabbed a folded towel, pressed it against the gap, and anchored it with her shoe. The stop-loss slowed the runaway flow, while the tray, freed from the tissue’s pull, righted itself. All the earlier scoops now stood above the foam, and with a soft plop the block slid under, tiny bubbles rising in confirmation of the resolution. A narrow thread of water kept winding past the towel, carrying two loose yellow petals toward the shadowed storage aisle.
Translation
