Someone had left the waiting seat slowly rocking beside the magazine rack when Pierce arrived with a silver-striped cat. Both washing basins were busy, so Pierce sat, listening to the cool hiss of water echoing from the tiled alcove. Basil, the cat, pressed his nose against the carrier door, his whiskers twitching like thin wires under fluorescent light. Behind them, a display shelf arched like a cathedral above the reception counter, its shampoo bottle held as a keystone.
