English Original
A curled amber streamer, a silver balloon pump, and a shallow bowl of rainbow sprinkles shared the living-room table. Wade gripped the pump’s plunger. Each pump stroke gave a steady wheeze, and the hissing return pushed warm oven air into a blue balloon. The oven door stood ajar while Clara, at the kitchen doorway, sowed seeds of coloured sprinkles across a chocolate frosting dome. Eight strokes formed Wade’s usual measure, yet the balloon still looked limp, so he added two more. Glossy latex rounded, showing a tiny bright circle of ceiling light on its surface. He pinched, twisted, and tied; the knot became the foundation for a small cluster already waiting beside a roll of ribbon. Warm draft and lamp heat fostered slow extra swelling, but Wade did not notice while he bent for another balloon.
By the time the cluster reached the ceiling corner, one balloon had brushed the streamer wall. Some of the tape had been weakened by gradual decay, and the loosening strip peeled down with a soft sigh. The freed streamer swayed and tapped the ribbon roll. The roll tumbled off the chair, and loops unwound like lazy snakes, tugging the balloon bunch sideways. Responsibility for the drifting mass now rested on Wade’s fingers, yet the rising warm air kept stretching the latex. A new pop sounded near his ear, startling Vera who stood on the low stool to press fresh tape. Clara pushed the oven door closed, cutting the heat. The upward current eased, and the balloons sagged just enough for Wade to gather them.
He glanced at the ribbon roll, which continued to unwind across the warm wood floor, forming a bright trail between scattered balloons. Vera hopped down and caught its end, lifting it just before it reached the sticky patch of frosting that had dropped earlier. The sight of the narrow escape drew a short laugh from Clara. Wade crouched beside the pump table; he kept twisting a fresh knot while the ribbon still spun in the air.
Translation
