The lowest clip on the drying rack above the craft corner dangled alone, its metal jaws outlined by a sharp rectangle of afternoon brightness. Felix pushed between shifting silhouettes of visitors and checked the inked tables beneath the hanging line. Every wooden surface already held elbows, blotting paper, and small trays; pale glare bounced from the ink pads, washing detail from their labels. He aimed to prepare a leaf print and claim the open clip before the session ended. A volunteer’s quiet countdown mixed with recorded birdsong. Felix stepped toward the closest gap, but a family edged forward, and he drew back. He tried to speak up over the rustle of newspaper, yet their taller frames blocked his view.
Gusts outside tilted blinds, sending a cascade of flickering bars across the floorboards. One band of light paused on a single rhododendron leaf that had fallen near the supply cart, its glossy surface reflecting a fine glare. If he had waited in the queue, the leaf would have lost that shine before he touched it. He grabbed a spare newsprint sheet, slid it under the leaf, and reached for the soft graphite stick stashed in his pocket. His first rub produced only pale streaks, and he nearly fumbled the fragile leaf, but he adjusted his timing, dragging the graphite slowly during each lull when the blinds stilled. Dark shapes emerged, outlining every vein with surprising clarity, a small rarity born from floorboards instead of ink pads.
When the volunteer signaled the final minute, Felix walked back to the rack. Sunlight had shifted, leaving the corner in dim relief, yet the third clip that had been vacant now pinched his grey-toned rubbing, its edges fluttering quietly above the finished tables.
Translation
