Briar lifted a fragile shell from the supply box and felt its cool curve press into his palm. A faint engraving of marine life lined the pink surface like tiny waves. He threaded cotton string through the drilled hole—Cora had been careful with the hand-drill earlier—then stepped to the quiet-comparison spot behind the trunk. The shell swung once, brushing his knuckles; its weight tugged the string with a gentle pull. Nearby, a squirrel crouched beneath the branch, a fat acorn wedged between sharp teeth. Briar set the shell moving; the dull tap against a wooden bead sounded pleasant alone, yet at the hanging branch the spoon and tin lid already fought for space, their pitches running together. He needed clearer distance.

Briar slipped back into sunlight and looped the string over a free twig, the branch warm against his wrist. The shell took its place, but its swing slowed whenever the heavy iron key beside it caught the same breeze, and the tones blurred. He was about to shift the key when a sudden hiss rose from the lawn sprinkler at the wind-test zone. The spray reached the blanket in seconds, darkening fabric and spotting the supply box. Cora sprang from her reading mat and handed him the box; water splashed over their ankles. Together they hurried to the porch steps, arms tingling under the cold drops. By the time they returned, the branch had dipped; extra weight from soaked strings pulled every chime lower, and the shell now missed its neighbour completely.

In the shifting shade, Briar pressed his shoulder under the branch to raise it. Cora slid a spare twig, thick as a thumb, between two twine knots to prop the limb higher. The squirrel climbed onto the mansion-shaped birdhouse near the fence, flicking its tail while its offspring squeaked inside the wooden walls. Their sudden motion sent a fresh tremor along the branch, and the chimes stirred in a rough chorus. Briar noticed the acorn in the squirrel’s grip: it echoed the rounded shell. He took a second string, tied the acorn below the shell, and let the lighter piece act as a counterweight; the shell swung wider and tapped the spoon with a bright ring instead of the key’s dull block. Briar leaned forward, fingers still twisting the new knot as the mixed tones quivered above.
