Wade had carried them downstairs to cool a glass pitcher of lemonade while the single washing machine spun. Inside his apartment the freezer was crowded; removing these pieces created the small surplus of space he needed. He poured cold tap water into the basin, hoping the mixture would optimize the chilling without waiting forty-five minutes. When the cubes finally touched the water, thin cracks quickly spread across their frost-white surfaces. He set the pitcher among them, then nudged the basin nearer the open stairwell window where cooler air drifted. That gentle move became the first quiet adjustment in a chain he had not planned.

Temperature dropped around the basin, and silvery vapor formed a ring like pale breath escaping a bottle. As the minutes passed, condensation gathered on the smooth table, formed beads, then slipped to the steel-grey tiles below. Each drop landed with a faint pat, combined, and crept toward the humming dryer that warmed the floor. Cold water meeting warm metal produced a low hiss; a thin mist lifted and drifted through the fluorescent light. The moving cloud curved into the corridor, fogging the lower glass of the landing window. Wade bent, saw the spreading path, and the scene showed that one more tweak mattered before moisture reached the electrical outlet. He grabbed a stack of blue towels from the detergent shelf and folded them into a narrow barrier along the tiles. If the towels became soaked, he could replace them with a mop head left beside the sink.

The towels absorbed most of the stray water, and the mist thinned until only wavering ribbons hovered above the drain. To slow the heat source, Wade turned the dryer’s knob backward; its drum eased into a quieter rhythm without a click. The lemonade felt cool now, so he lifted the pitcher and stepped onto the balcony that faced the internal courtyard. He tore two mint leaves, let them float as garnish, and sipped while sunlight touched the rim. Above, the towels continued darkening by degrees, but the flow had weakened and no new beads formed. At the same moment on the rooftop clothesline, sheets fluttered upward across the railing, corners sweeping toward the pale afternoon sky.
