Rough rope fibres rasped Gwen’s palm while she eased a loop away from the iron bollard beside the weighing station. Diesel fumes tangled with sour fish-skin tang, and a wet wooden crate rocked against her boot. A green pinprick glowed through a gap in the plank, bright as a firefly trapped behind cracked varnish. She crouched, and cold brine odour drifted up from the puddle seeping under the crate’s base. The crate surface felt grainy. Each pulse bent through a water droplet, shaping an octagon of colour on the damp stone. She tipped the crate an inch forward, and a metallic tang swirled from the pooled water.

A sliver of brightness slipped free, and an actual firefly fluttered out. Its faint glow vanished into the diesel haze above the quiet net racks. With the crate now moved, wind struck the hanging scale and made the octagon pan spin. Rigging wires hummed while the pan began a wavering dance beneath the gusts. The spinning pan bumped a bag of prawns. Peppery steam from a nearby kettle drifted through, adding a smoky shrimp smell. Gwen wedged the crate against the chain. The only merit of the idea lay in its broad face that blocked most gusts. Earlier, to optimize space, someone had parked that same crate on the ice box lid. Now the lid sagged open, releasing a sweet-cold fish perfume.

Meltwater trickled over the clipboard chain and splashed her trouser cuffs with a vinegar-sharp chill. She lifted a lighter plastic tub from the loading zone and pressed it across the ice box lid, trading weight for speed. The lid no longer gaped, though a thin line of mist still escaped and brushed her knuckles with metallic cold. Behind her, the scale swayed but stayed readable, its octagon pan steady enough for the waiting deckhand. Gwen slid the tub flat on the ice, and a briny chill lingered in the air around her sleeves.
