Six warm rolls sat inside the wicker bread basket, while six more still crackled on the rack beside the zoo café window. A waiter behind the glass whisked a pale batter, the metal looping with a rhythm like slow rain on tin. Viola lifted the basket, planning a quiet snack while she and Jude queued for the reptile house reopening. The humidity pumps had been reset, so the glass doors stayed locked, and a low compressor hum spread across the path. Children shuffled, their shoes scuffing the tiles, and muffled commentary flowed from an info panel’s tiny speaker. Waiting stretched, and Viola began to knead a folded leaflet between her thumbs, trying to fathom the shifting timetable. If the doors opened soon, they would still reach the otter pool before the midday bell.
While heading toward a shaded bench, the basket grazed the iron rail and a crumb pinged onto the paving stones. A tiny sparrow shot forward with a brief trill, grabbed the prize, and hopped beneath the stroller of a nearby family. The sudden flutter startled a resting peafowl just outside its low fence, and the bird released a sharp, trumpet-like cry. That call rippled along the row of benches; pigeons lifted, wings drumming against air, scattering snack wrappers in twisting arcs. A wrapper sailed toward the doorway, a motion sensor blinked, and the reptile house doors slid apart with a hydraulic hiss. Before the gathering crowd could surge forward, a keeper swung a quiet barrier pole across the threshold, halting the cascade of feet. Viola kept her eyes on the reopened entrance and missed the ants gathering under the bench. Under the bench, a line of ants carried the fallen crumb toward a hairline crack, tiny legs flicking dust across the stone.
Translation
