She pinched the ribbed stem, noticing a tiny bubble locked in one channel. To tailor the concentration, she added a single drop of dye, watching a darker swirl spin upward. Her notebook lay open at a candid sketch of the stalks, pencils rolling whenever her elbow brushed them. Imagination filled the margins with arrows and small clouds, an arcadia of ideas pointing toward vibrant stripes on every leafy tip.

A muffled crash echoed from the hallway; the sound clipped her breath short. She set the magnifying glass down and hurried out, finding the family cat juggling bottle caps across the tiles. Metal clinked until she gathered the caps and nudged the cat aside. When she stepped back into the kitchen, minutes had passed. Sunlight now struck the red glass directly, warming it, while a cool draft from the open window shaded the blue one. The red stalk showed bold bands; the blue water looked nearly colourless. Reese entered from the garden, sleeves damp, and lifted the ruler. Without a word, he swapped the chilly blue glass with the warmer yellow position, then steadied it while Ella trimmed a fresh celery piece that Cal had cut diagonally at the sink. The new stalk slid in, and darker blue lines began to climb.

They watched quietly, their heads nearly touching. Tiny shadows shifted inside the stem as dye advanced. The notebook stood upright beside the blue glass, positioned by Reese to block any returning draft. A faint hiss of escaping air confirmed the bubble’s release; progress quickened. A soft pop interrupted them: the overheated red glass had cracked near the base and a thin leak crept onto the towel. Ella slid a saucer beneath it, then checked the blue again. The glass that had appeared almost clear before now threw a pale shadow of cobalt across the damp towel.
