English Original

Gravel rasped under Rafael’s trainers as he swung a small blue scoop against his thigh and stepped into the first broad crossing of the hedge maze. Warm, still air, trapped by the dense leaves, pressed gently against his cheeks. His father waited on a stone bench at the centre, and reaching that clearing was the game. Two ribbons tied to the corner hedge had been bleached almost white by sun, so their original colour now told nothing. Rafael paused to decide. Bees murmured above the hedge tops, and the flowers they visited always faced south; that idea came from an oceanography exhibit last month—the branching paths reminded him of tidal channels. Based on the bee sound, he chose the right fork, brushing a loose vine aside as it grazed his arm. The gravel on that corridor felt smooth, yet after twenty steps it ended against a blank wall of boxwood.

He tugged free when a twig caught his sleeve, then studied the dead-end floor. Someone had arranged a neat arrow with pale stones, but its point aimed straight at the hedge. Loose twigs skimmed his backpack, leaving faint pale dusty marks behind. Kneeling, Rafael scraped the gritty surface with his scoop; compacted dust hid another arrow pressed deeper, angled sideways toward a narrow gap at ground level. The hedge base felt damp and cool. He pushed the scoop ahead to test firmness and shuffled through; branches bent without breaking, releasing a sharp, green scent. The passage opened into a lookout corner. From there the sundial flashed in sunlight two corridors away. Gravel was coarse and freshly turned, a sign of many feet. He followed its rough line until the marigold ring appeared. Rafael placed the blue scoop on the cool bench surface, its gritty handle catching a mote of sunlight.

Translation
