English Original
Bea plunged the coat-hanger hoop into the milky bucket, and the frame clinked against the rim. She lifted it briskly, and a wobbling soap film flashed stripes of lime, violet, and amber. Warm noon light heated the slick surface so quickly that darker bands slid downward like syrup. A sour detergent tang reached her tongue; the smell confessed the mix had been standing all morning. Before she could step toward the shady fence, the top edge thinned, snapped, and sprayed cool droplets across her sleeve. Her brisk lift had left the film fragile, and the burst of warmth finished the tear.
Bea wiped her hands on grass, then crossed the garden to inspect the rows of vernal mint near the fence. A faint earthy perfume rose from the damp soil, mixing with the sweet soap haze that still lingered around her nose. A ladybug wayfarer crawled along a wooden peg, pausing whenever her shadow cooled the sun-warmed surface. Nearby, Wade experimented with the slotted spoon, releasing peppery clouds that burst against the fence and left spicy droplets on the planks. The bucket had been stirred; gray foam moored itself around the rim and muted the normal fresh scent. Bea leaned over the garden tap, sipping a thread of cool water; the metallic taste washed away soap sweetness from her mouth. She crouched to weed a corner bed, crushing a leaf of thyme that released a sharp medicinal vapour around her knees.
A shout near the table drew Bea back; the coat-hanger hoop leaned against a flowerpot beside a marble pathstone. Wade had lifted it after finishing his spoon tests and forgotten to dip again. Sunlit air still tasted sweet, but heavier clouds drifted over, cooling the garden by a thin, delicious margin. Bea slid two fingers along the hoop, now slick with cooler solution, then raised it slowly toward the wind-shadow wall. The lower temperature thickened the film; rainbow bands moved lazily instead of racing downward. Near the bucket, foam rings drifted in tiny circles, untouched, while she turned away toward Wade.
Translation
