Only three eggs lay loose in Zane’s refrigerator tray this morning, so he pushed a supermarket cart past the whooshing entrance doors, planning to refill the shelf. A yeasty puff drifted from the bakery counter and mixed with the sharp tang of dill pickles nearby, each briny jar trying to tell a story of sunny picnics. The cart’s front wheel rasped against the polished floor, then froze beside a price tag seam. Zane knelt to examine the wheel; stale dust and a faint metallic taste hung in the chilled air blowing from the freezer cases. He rocked the frame forward, hoping the wobble would persuade the wheel to roll, but the axle stayed rigid and badgered him with short, squeaky bursts.

Rafe stepped from the produce section, carrying herbs that smelled pepper-bright and wet. He had been sent by their friend York to find bread, yet paused when he saw the jammed cart. Together they heaved on the handle, shifting weight with slow rhythm. Cold air carrying the sweet hint of vanilla ice cream washed over their hands, and the wheel finally twitched, only to snag again on the same strip. The blockage was identical, just a few centimetres farther along. If the wheel jammed once more, they would still be staring at empty egg trays at supper time.

Rafe reached into his small bike pouch and produced a pocket wrench scented faintly of bicycle grease. The nut on the axle had been tightened by years of use; a dull, coppery smell rose as metal scraped metal. Zane steadied the basket while Rafe loosened the fitting half a turn. On their second push they angled the cart slightly left, letting the freed wheel glide over the seam. A dusty paper coupon that had been trapped beneath the tyre fluttered onto the floor beside a faint grey scuff, curving like a thin crescent across the tile.

雷夫從隨身的自行車小包掏出一支帶點機油味的小扳手。那顆車軸螺帽多年來被鎖得死緊；金屬摩擦時冒出鈍銅味。贊恩扶穩車籃，雷夫把螺帽鬆開半圈。第二次推車時，他們把車頭微往左斜，讓已鬆脫的輪子順利越過接縫。一張原本被輪胎壓住、帶灰塵味的折價券飄到地上，旁邊多了一道淡灰色的弧形擦痕。
