Warm metal pressed against Cleo's forearm as she leaned over the bench armrest. A repeating chevron of shadow-edge angles appeared where six coloured threads crossed the glare stripe, each tilt mirroring the last. Beyond the bench, iron infrastructure from the playground threw long silhouettes across the paving. Tiny weeds continued to flourish between cracks, their stems back-lit so each stood like a glowing ribbon. Sunlight bounced from the tape, sending a reflected-gleam across the waxy fibres and sharpening every hue. Cleo twisted one forward knot; a faint creak marked the tightened strand.
She advanced another row, but two neighbouring threads, almost identical in shade, had slipped behind the fan and switched places. The shift bent the fresh angles, turning the chevrons into a blurred silhouette beneath the fiercest light. Cleo paused, sliding the half-made band into a narrow shaft-of-light that cut across her palm. By tilting it, she traced which strand had wandered from the centre line. A quick tug loosened three knots; the waxy fibres had already shown more resilience than she expected. She guided the correct thread forward again and rebuilt the row, leaving a tiny zigzag flourish among the restored chevrons.
She now meant to finish the bracelet today so it would fit Zinnia's wrist before the picnic tomorrow. A sudden breeze lifted the tape; its grip failed, and glare rolled over the loosened fan of threads. The whole spread slumped sideways, threatening to erase the new pattern she had just rebuilt. Mabel, back-lit on the grass beside a basket, turned a page yet stayed quiet on her blanket. Cleo pinched the woven end, looped it under the shadow-edge of the armrest, and anchored the bundle against sun-warm steel. With tension restored, alternating arrows and chevrons aligned again, marching across the glare stripe like cautious dancers. Cleo tightened a fresh knot on the armrest where plain threads had earlier fanned loose.
Translation
