He and Oona had agreed on a simple race—reach the far bank of the three-pace rink before the edges melted away. Yesterday’s downpour had filled the hollow; night frost turned the water into cloudy blue-grey glass, trapping scraps from last month’s parade under the surface. A faded tulip petal lay near the rim, frozen upright so that its thin ridge rose above the ice. Clyde pushed off, but his boot struck that ridge, jerked sideways, and stopped his glide. He rocked back, tried to sweep the bump flat with a short wooden broom, and heard only a gritty scrape; the petal stayed locked in place and the lost seconds let the soft edge weaken further.

His second shuffle sent ripples of sound through the ice; a sparrow pecking near the warm patch sprang upward at the crackle. The bird’s sudden lift tossed a damp ribbon from the old celebration into the air; the strip drifted, landed on the centre lane, and threatened to tangle any slide. Oona tapped the broom handle on the stone, ready to clear it, yet Clyde’s eyes fixed on the stubborn tulip ridge. The same rough line that had blocked him also offered something the slick sheet lacked—grip. He planted his rear boot against it, toes digging into the tiny rise. Muscle tension coiled along his calves, then released; the ridge held long enough to give a strong launch, and he glided clean over the ribbon before it settled. The sparrow, now perched on a rail, ruffled once and calmed, ending the small chain of motion. Oona nudged the loosened ribbon to the side, then stepped forward for her turn. Clyde placed the broom on the warming stone; meltwater trickled past its handle toward the shrinking ring of ice.
