Silver Ink on the Tilted Table-

English Original
Tara eased through the corridor, elbows close, and placed two fresh fern leaves on the only free craft-corner table. Thin silver light from the high window began to brighten the newspaper that covered the surface, but the board itself tilted slightly; the recent heatwave had warped its legs and given it an almost invisible slope. A jar of steel-grey ink, already uncapped by a previous visitor, started to drift downhill. Tara slid a finger toward it, yet the smooth glass kept moving, touched a pile of pressed leaves, and nudged them against Nina’s drying frame on the same table. The frame rocked like a slow metronome, then tapped a light plastic cup. Water sloshed, a bead ran over the rim, and Tara’s print darkened where the droplet landed.
She breathed out and tried a small change: the first time, she had pressed straight down on the jar; now she turned it ninety degrees, hoping the thicker side might persuade the board to stay balanced. The jar still edged forward, though more lazily, so she folded a scrap of newspaper, twice, then a third time, and shoved the wedge under the front leg of the table. The diligent gardener outside had trimmed the hedge earlier, and a stray twig lay near Tara’s shoe; she tucked it beside the paper for extra grip. The cascade slowed. Leaves lay scattered, yet most prints remained clear. A second bead slid from the cup, but the raised leg held, and the water curved toward the table centre instead of the edge. Two volunteers walked past, counting available seats, but did not stop. Tara had been aiming for a perfect row of five prints; she accepted four, lifted them to the drying rack, and stepped back. At the table’s far corner, the redirected bead of water travelled inward, drawing a faint silver trail across the pale newsprint.
