Tiny damp marks had speckled the pale gravel long before Sam reached the dense culm cluster that morning. Amber light slipped between trunks, turning each mark into a soft silhouette against the path. Gemma followed behind with a notebook, stepping aside when the wind paused and every knocking culm fell quiet. Within that hush they could witness a faint whistle leaking from somewhere among the green pillars. The next gust returned, drums rolled overhead, and the whistle vanished beneath wood and leaf. Sam pressed a palm to a culm; resin warmed by a sun stripe began to melt against his skin. He could not apprehend the whistle’s source yet, but the puzzle hovered like morning haze around them.
Another lull exposed a hairline crack near the base of one culm, trembling like a reed mouthpiece. Each fresh breeze pushed air through the gap and rebuilt the clear, lonely note again. Sam crouched, gathered three dry sheath strips from the bamboo litter floor, and tested the first wedge. It slipped halfway inside and softened the whistle, yet a thin hiss kept weaving through the stems. The second strip bolstered the wall so the culm swayed without bending, but still the note lingered. Gemma scribbled an observation, and the act of watching seemed to slow their breathing between gusts. A quick wave of wind returned, the whistle flickered, and Sam weighed the final strip in his fingers.
Only one brittle sheath remained, its edges curled the colour of toasted honey under the shifting light. He wondered whether the sliver would fit or split, then turned it lengthwise in a small gamble. The grove fell silent, and his next breath timed the careful push between the green halves. Resistance rose, then gave way in a single pulse; the hiss collapsed to nothing instantly. Sam slid the last sheath fully into the crack, and the hollow note stopped there.
Translation
