Sam stepped into the brick-moulding zone, and a neat row of fresh blocks already lined the ground, their edges pointing toward the half-built wall where Hollis packed snow with damp gloves. The plastic container felt slippery in Sam’s grasp; wet flakes squeezed between his fingers each time he pressed them down. He flipped the mould, tapped the bottom, and a dense brick dropped with a dull thump. A bell pealed from the small chapel across the street, its metallic notes rolling over the yard like a jubilant celebration hidden behind the grey sky. Inside the fort, the entrance gap still waited, edges sagging where yesterday’s bricks had turned crumbly. Sam lifted the new block and trudged toward the opening.

As he crossed the fence snow bank, his boot scraped a shallow tunnel and startled a field mouse that had been dozing beneath the crust. The tiny body darted toward the wall, flicking powder in every direction. Hollis jerked back at the sudden movement; her elbow nudged the top row, and a loose brick slid inward. The brick landed on the interior floor with a soft crunch, shaking loose another clump of snow that rained onto the mouse. The startled creature shot under the fort’s far side, where a stray cat had taken shelter from the storm. The cat sprang up, streaking across the yard and knocking over the shovel that leaned against the fence. The metal blade slapped the packed ground, sending a vibration through the partly frozen surface.

The vibration reached the entrance gap just as Sam arrived, and both leaning ends sagged together. He slipped one arm inside, palm flat against the rough inner face, and used the other hand to wedge his brick across the opening like a temporary beam. Snow compressed under his gloves; icy water began to drain from the seams, so he squeezed the fabric once, flicking drops away. Hollis hurried to right the shovel and then pressed another brick beside Sam’s, thickening the support until the wall stiffened. Their quick brace froze in place within minutes, creating a low vault over the doorway rather than a simple gap. A thin rivulet of meltwater trickled along the flattened floor and toward the yard beyond, its quiet motion continuing long after their hands pulled back.
