From the porch, a metallic clang broke their rhythm; the wind had knocked a small shovel against the railing. Harris stacked two side pieces first, delaying the roof section until the lower ring firmed under the shade. When the last sphere hissed into place, they carried it to the step where an adult waited with the candle jar. Orange light pulsed through one thin patch, turning the dented side into a lamp for the deepening blue yard. A faint thread of wood smoke lingered in the cold air long after the boys stepped back.
