Coins clinked in the tip jar, cutting through the murmur that hovered under the entrance pendant lights. Sharp steam hiss followed from the coffee machine, and its glow back-lit a row of glasses above the bar. Pendant lamps cast shadow-edges across the bench, and cool soft slats pressed through Kent’s trousers while he waited. Kent adjusted the fabric pouch that carried his terrier after the long hillside walk outside the city. Botanical sketches under the laminated menu display caught his eye while he read the clipboard where their name waited in evening glare. A tower of stacked plates behind the cashier reflected-gleam from overhead bulbs, hinting how many diners still remained inside. When a late group of eight entered, the host squeezed tickets together; Kent watched their line drop farther downward. Accepting the offered two-seater beside the kitchen doorway became their first strategy against the expanding pooled-darkness of waiting.

That table had been placed directly under a pendant whose overexposed circle of light glared onto Kent’s plate and the panting dog. Each swing of the door pushed warm air across their knees, then left a brief penumbra of shadows over the tiled floor. Kent leaned sideways, yet the beam still traced the dog’s whiskers, so the animal tucked its head deeper against the pouch lining. Paul, who had been studying the dessert menu, noticed the twitch and gripped the narrow table edge, preparing to slide it sideways. Together they nudged the metal legs one careful span, slowly guiding the weight across the smooth tile without scraping loudly. The beam now fell in a softer ring that left the dog silhouette still but noticeably cooled its breathing. A pale arc where the table had stood earlier remained visible, a dull streak reflecting the pendant’s shifting halo across the floor.
