He wanted the parcel for his cousin to pass the counter scale on the first try, yet the white rectangle in front of him showed a blot where the correction fluid had dried thicker on the left. That lumpy ridge looked like a tiny pavilion roof, shelter built by accident, and the clerk had already sent him back once. He had scraped at the ridge with his nail, but the crust broke into crumbs that rolled across the paper and refused to lift away. Each failed scrape added fresh glare under the desk lamp and pushed his goal farther from the serene rhythm of the advancing queue.

A final flick of his finger sent one crumb tumbling off the form; the speck landed on a resting moth. Startled, the insect shot upward, brushed the dangling instruction sheet, and slapped it against Idris’s shoulder. Idris jerked back, bumped the pen chain, and the swinging links knocked the uncapped bottle. Milky fluid slid toward the new form, but their mother’s quick hand steadied the bottle, stopping the slide before it reached the lines. Tranquility returned in a single breath, yet the fresh spill left a peelable flap. Lars noticed its smooth underside, as glossy as a tiny plastic spatula. He pinched the curved fragment, flattened it, and ran its edge over the blot. The same thickness that had ruined the surface now spread the wet layer evenly like a canopy laid over grass. When he lifted the piece, the patch lay flat; the loupe would find no bump. He waited under the overhead lamps until the fluid turned matte, then crossed toward the counter with Idris beside him.

Behind them, the pen chain continued its slow arc, shimmering under the steady desk light.

彼らが離れたあとも、ペンの鎖は机の光を受けながらゆっくり弧を描き続けていた。
