Erik carried one of the mixed trays to the doorway, pausing where cooler air met his face with a faint clay smell from wet pots. He waited, then crushed another seed gently; a sweet, almost anise note bloomed this time, unlike the sharper oregano sample he had compared seconds earlier. They shifted half the seeds into the correct basin, when the cat brushed past again. Several tiny seeds clung to its fur and rained onto the floorboards as it shook beside the water container. Winona knelt, nudged the loose kernels into a jar, and set the half-filled tray next to the dozing cat.
