The girls hoped to raise the weathered marker one layer higher, an intergenerational habit many hikers shared. Lucia lowered the heavy slab with care, but the extra height caught a sudden gust. Light flickered, the new stone leaned, and the whole column tipped. The highest piece slid off, struck a loose pebble, and the pebble skittered downhill, tracing a thin band of glare until it lodged in packed earth.
