Yellow slid into an empty chamber, and blue followed, but the swirl looked more like a quarrel than a blend. Sara tried to guarantee a smooth tone by rinsing the stick in the glass cup; the water had already turned the colour of weak tea. One more careful stir seemed to assure her the shade was close enough, and she bent forward, watching for streaks.

A sudden rattle from the kettle forced her to the counter; steam hissed against the tiles until the handle had been pressed down. She stayed only a minute, yet when she returned, the scene on the newspaper had shifted. A bead of brown rinse water had rolled from the cup, followed the faint slope of the table, and slipped over the rim of the untouched red well. The thin liquid carried a ribbon of red across the tray, then dripped again, landing squarely in the once-pure blue. Green burst outward, darker than the mix she had prepared, and the fluid cascade spread toward the newspaper edge. Sara folded a strip of paper towel, wedged it under the tray, and the flow curved away, soaking into the absorbent fold instead of racing further.
