English Original
A pale oval of pressed grass lay where the spare basket had rested beside the first pear tree. Forrest crouched, sliding his palm over the cool blades and noticing a thin damp line of soil edging the mark. Iris arrived with the short ladder balanced on one shoulder. The wooden rungs brushed her sleeve as she paused beside the empty patch. A wasp drifted past, its buzz steady. A distant melodic tune leaked from a worker’s pocket radio near the gate. Above them, sun-warmed branches carried pears whose skins shifted from coarse to waxy toward the tips.
Forrest picked up a windfall pear; its bruise yielded under his thumb, then he placed it inside the half-heavy canvas basket. Iris planted the ladder by the trunk, yet one foot sank into moist soil, tilting the frame toward her knee. Forrest caught the side rail while she dragged the ladder two steps right onto firmer earth. Once Iris climbed, the branch swayed away; Forrest pressed his palm to the bark below and nudged the limb closer. Someone had stacked that basket at dusk yesterday, yet now it dangled from a green strap like a lantern among the leaves. The sight confirmed that a squirrel’s scramble had caused the positive impact beneath them.
Forrest steadied the ladder while Iris climbed the lowest rung and freed the strap; the basket slid down, tapping his knuckles. He set the recovered basket between his boots, and Iris rearranged the top layer so nothing rolled. They paused only long enough to embrace change in their rhythm whenever the ladder shifted hands. Sunlight flashed through a crystal jar half-filled with water on the sorting table. Iris lowered a bird-pecked pear inside, bubbles skating along the chipped rim. Pulp trimmed from bruised skins would soon join the compost heap everyone called the sustainable future pile. Forrest nudged the ladder a handspan aside, leaving two shallow grooves in the damp earth.
Translation
