A second pair of hands tugged the string near the hedge, trimming loose cotton strands with child-safe scissors. Felix paused on the sun-warm stone at station A, seeing Lyra balanced on a tilted wooden crate beyond the leaves. Between them the cotton line shivered whenever wind crossed the grassy clearing where last night’s spring festival had pressed circles into the turf like a temporary dance floor. A small barrel had been painted amber years ago; it still held rainwater caught during the lantern-lighting. Near Felix’s ankle lay the supply basket; its lid propped open against a tiny tray of moss, pebbles, and spoon-sized twigs that formed Lyra’s unfinished miniature garden. A robin hopped along the hedge top, tilting its head each time the string hummed.
Felix lifted the tin can, the rolled rim cool against his ear, and pulled until the line stretched straight for exactly ten paces. The first test sent only his own breathing back. He had noticed a twig brushing the cord, so he stepped off the stone, guided the cotton over the branch, and gained two more paces of tension; the vibration grew sharper yet still broke apart like a skipped beat in a dance routine. Lyra waved, then mouthed a word. Wind swept through the hedge, a warm ribbon of air that bowed the cord and stole that extra tightness. He eyed the line; if it stayed tight, voices would travel far more clearly. They clipped away a frayed section, tied a new meter from the spool, and the can at station A rang faintly—another small gain, but speech remained blurred.
While coaxing the knot through the can base, Felix twisted the can a quarter-turn to tuck it deeper. The hidden burr now faced away, and a clear syllable popped through the metal shell. He froze, counted fifteen paces of tightened cord, and realised the earlier gains combined. The string thrummed like a plucked guitar wire; Lyra’s complete sentence raced across. A gust pressed the hedge, bending leaves and dragging the line downward. If the cord touched wet grass, the clarity would vanish. Felix slid a spare can from the basket, propped it under the midpoint, and lifted the cotton above the swaying twigs. He backed away to give the telephone space. Across the clearing, the pale strand quivered in amber light while dandelion seeds glided beneath its new arch toward the open field.
Translation
