The tissue paper roll looked neat, but a darkened strip near its core hinted at hidden moisture. Peppermint sap and dusty petals drifted around Fraser at the wrapping station, while Odette outside inhaled the rain-cooled snapdragon air. Fraser had promised their grandmother bright tulips, and the petals offered an apple-sweet aroma beneath damp leaves. Yesterday’s rain had slipped through the doorway and seemed to rejuvenate buckets, leaving earthy steam that tingled on his tongue. The new roll of cellophane leaned nearby, its clear sheen hinting at a fresh start for any bruised stem. Beside the tape dispenser sat a sticker shaped like a green thumb, its paint smelling mildly of wet cardboard. He gave the red ribbon one quick jerk, hoping to finish before the tulips warmed, yet the strand seized halfway. Damp loops clung together, releasing a sour glue smell that brushed his fingertips when he shook the knot.
Above the display, the mister hissed, sending a citrus-tinged cloud that landed on the wrapping bench. Droplets speckled the tangled ribbon, and Fraser waited, letting the thin moisture soak through before touching it again. When the mister fell silent, he pinched the outer loop and drew it slowly to the cooler’s quiet tick. At last, ribbon was being released, nearly the length of his forearm, though a dusty loop still sagged inside. He dragged the ribbon along the edge; friction frayed it, then he looped it twice and tied a knot. He remembered the florist saying wrapping can cultivate relationships and that shows offer networking opportunities, yet no one helped. Water from the mister still glimmered on the counter, and a spicy lily scent drifted up as he lifted the bouquet. Thin reddish streaks crossed the damp tissue where ribbon dye had bled during his struggle.
Translation
