Dorian crouched beside her, his back forming a tight hunch across the rough lever branch. A flat rock had been chosen for its broad top, yet its gritty underside grated like sandpaper. When they pressed down together, the rock flipped free with a hollow thud, and the branch sprang back. June applauded the dust from her palms, the small claps echoing like tiny drums between fence slats. If the slab slid again, the branch would barely budge, yet both children leaned in with steadier rhythm.
