English Original
The rope rung rasped against Zeke’s palm like sandpaper warmed by the rising sun. He climbed toward the branch junction where three thick limbs gripped the trunk. The ladder swayed and groaned at each change of weight. This short climb had slipped into his morning routine. Today he aimed to lock a guard plank across a narrow gap between two limbs. A thin wedge, cut from scrap, went in first; its edges squealed against damp bark, and the plank stood a finger higher. Wind pushed leaves overhead, their chorus dense and abundant, yet the new level still leaned. Once it sat firm, the guard plank would stand as the cornerstone for the rest of the railing. It had been trimmed from a leftover step the evening before.
Unsatisfied, Zeke had lifted a third, chunkier shim from the bucket, convinced that more wood would silence the wobble. As he drove it in, the hammerbeats echoed through the canopy and rattled a squirrel curled above the junction. The animal sprang to a neighbouring limb; that leap shook a cluster of starlings dozing farther out. Wings clapped in a rapid burst, and the sudden plethora of flutters turned the quiet branches loud as rain on canvas. The startled birds whipped past the hoisting rope; their draft sent the hanging bucket spinning. Its metal lip drummed against the trunk, bark flakes rained down, and the rope twisted tighter until the pulley hissed. Introspection flickered while Zeke watched the chain reaction spread beyond his reach.
A sharper crack came from below when the bucket slapped the lowest rung, and that noise snapped Zeke back to the joint. The three stacked shims now wedged the plank so wide that one edge hovered in mid-air. He slid his fingers under the middle piece and gave a swift tug. The bulky shim dropped through the gap with a dull thud on the soil. The remaining two slipped closer together; their narrower mass let the plank sink flush against the bark. Its creak faded to a low murmur. To halt the swinging bucket, Zeke looped the rope twice around the tool hook until the metal ring hummed under tension. A lone leaf, loosened by all the earlier motion, spiralled toward the grass and kept turning in the breeze.
Translation
