Quinn crouched beside the moss-coated trunk, rain dotting his sleeve with pale specks. Faye stepped closer, balancing her slim portfolio against her hip while studying the tree that blocked the trail. The creature perched on the highest ridge of bark; its spherical shell caught the cool shaft of daylight that poured through the canopy gap, every droplet on the shell shining like a tiny lens. A slow overture of antennae unfolded, testing the air. Between Faye and a steady footing stretched slick moss, and between Quinn and the far side leaned a single ash branch left by an earlier hiker. Water pooled around their boots, and the damp green carpet squelched under any careless gesture.

Quinn reached for the branch, yet Faye raised a palm in quiet persuasion, needing the same support to steady her camera. The walking stick had been wedged against the upright root plate, its tip already glazed with mud, and the wood creaked when Quinn tugged. He paused; she slid her portfolio beneath her coat and offered the branch across the trunk like a narrow bridge. Rain thickened, turning the moss into a sliding ribbon; the snail began to drift, leaving a translucent trail. The flat rock near their toes had been loosened by other boots and tilted each time one of them shifted weight. If the rain had paused, the surface might have held them both, yet droplets kept gathering, pushing them toward a new idea.

Quinn pressed his palm under the log and found bark almost dry. With a nod to Faye, he ducked, bracing the branch beneath the trunk. Faye knelt on the wobbling rock to keep her shoes out of the mud and angled her lens toward the hidden side. The snail, still sliding, reached the rim and clung easily to the rough underside; its sudden course change turned the obstacle into a guide. Faye focused while Quinn used the branch as a low rail to pull himself through. He pressed a palm against the dry underside beside the snail, and faint warmth stayed on his skin.

「看那隻蝸牛。」
