Hana brushed loose chalk dust off the slate with a quick sideways sweep this morning. The iron gnomon already felt sun-warm on one side, yet its shaded face remained cool like steel-grey ice. She aimed to mark the shadow tip every two minutes, filling the notebook before the hour-line numbers blurred. First, she drew a fine frost-white stroke from the current tip outward, ending in a pointed flourish beside last interval’s trace. That single line appeared sharp enough to drink from, almost a chalk chalice catching the sun’s blue-grey light. A satisfied smile crossed her lips when the pencil noted time and angle with neat numbers beside the column header. A single blue wildflower lay beside the basket, its petals reflecting soft light against the slate’s shadowed rim.
Two minutes later the shadow had crept beyond her fresh stroke, so she hurried to add a second thicker line. Chalk dust gathered along the groove like a pale delta, widening the band and hiding the engraved hour-marks underneath. Her eyebrows knit while she pressed harder during the third pass, seeking a crisper edge. Frost-white grains piled quickly until the curve grew as wide as her thumb there on slate. Some dust had been trapped under the protractor hinge, so it drifted farther and spoiled the reading. Meanwhile the sun heated the iron post further, so the shadow shortened fractionally, escaping her busy chalk before she noticed. A faint scent from clipped hedges slipped past her sun hat, but the smudged figures refused to become clear.
A stray cloud slid across the sky, cooling the steel-grey gnomon and pausing the moving edge in a dim half-light. Hana used the lull to study the tangled chalk; three swollen tracks overlapped, but only the middle band warped the measured arc. She lifted the eraser cloth and, with one decisive swipe, removed that central ribbon, sending fine powder into the blue-grey breeze. The outer two lines, freed from crowding, now framed the shadow tip perfectly when sunlight returned, revealing the subtle leftward drift. Hana marked the discovery in her notebook, then stepped back, brushing chalk from her fingers onto the slate’s cool edge. Behind the reference wall, the garden volunteer lifted the watering can once more, sending a thin stream over the shadowed privet.
Translation
