A sharp pop of escaping air broke the quiet between waves. Right beside the sound, a dulled silver line of snail slime stretched across the rim of an upper shelf pool—fresh evidence that something had crossed only moments before. Jasper crouched, palm flat on the rough, sun-warmed rock; his older sister Gwen adjusted a camera two steps back. Salt crystals pressed like coarse sugar under his knee, and water around the pool felt cool through the thin fabric of his sleeve as he steadied himself. Limpets ringed the upper edge, their tight shells spaced like seats at a rough dinner table. Sunlight bounced off the water in restless bands, turning the bright surface into a mirror. That mirror hid the tiny climber whose trail lay before him, and every blink of light stung his eyes. Behind him, their open notebook waited on the dry observation rock, pages fluttering whenever a breeze slipped along the ledge.
He slid a flat hand across the pool’s rim, testing its skin-smooth curve; the rock beneath turned slippery where dark algae ended. A thought formed: if his body could cast shade, the glare might fade. He leaned forward, and the bright lines weakened. There, a periwinkle shell stirred; its owner crept out, claw tips brushing the gritty floor as if seeking adventure across the miniature valley. Turning the shell between two fingertips, he gained an insight—this was no snail but a hermit crab beginning a remarkable journey inside a borrowed home. While he studied the tiny pioneer, wind pushed harder at the notebook behind him. A page flipped free, skated over the rock, and stopped in a damp hollow: shading the pool had saved his view yet soaked their notes. Gwen crouched and pinned the page with her camera strap. Jasper shifted, wedged a coarse pebble on the stack, then eased the crab into the water, and cool salt tingled against his fingers.
Translation
