Shadows Around the Wrong Lid-

English Original
A glazed lid rocked under a stray breeze, scattering glare across the pottery stall’s narrow top shelf. Stripes of light slipped between canvas awnings and flashed along its round edge like quicksilver. Basil reached for the lid, intending only to peek inside the matching casserole beneath the shelf. The piece refused to budge; glaze had fused lid and dish, and his knuckles skidded on the slick rim. The casserole had been fired at too high a temperature, a faint ripple frozen beneath the shine. He gave a second twist, heard nothing, and let the stubborn pot shimmer unanswered in the corridor of light.
A delivery cart rattled through a shaft of brightness, forcing the potter and nearby patrons to pull crates inward. Basil stepped sideways, the sudden squeeze carrying him toward the spice stall where glass jars caught and fractured the midday glare. An artisan in a back-lit apron ladled red powder into a brass scoop, then paused while the scale’s needle steadied. Waiting, Basil tried to eavesdrop on loose gossip drifting between stalls, yet high voices overlapped until the words blurred like layered echoes. If the lane were quieter, he would catch the faint clink of each jar before the hum swallowed it. His hands found a cracked leather strap among the belts and, by simple intuition, he threaded its buckle through a tighter hole. The vendor nodded once, a brief reflected gleam passing over the scoop. Basil drifted toward the tea stand, where rising steam haloed a line of tiny ceramic cups.
The cart’s rumble faded and daylight pooled wider across the pottery stall. In that glare, the same lid lay beside a broader casserole base just unpacked. Basil brushed stray dust away, tilted the lid half a turn, and its grip loosened without the earlier strain. The motion echoed the brisk buckle adjustment his fingers had practiced among the belts. A fine ridge on the rim proved the top truly belonged to this newly displayed pot, not the first dish. At the same hour, beyond the spice stall’s penumbra, another customer twisted a mismatched lid free. Basil guided his own lid onto its rightful rim, the faint contact sending a thin ring of shadow around the joined clay.
Translation
