The gravel was oddly springy under Finn’s boot, giving with a hushed sigh where he expected crisp crunches. He knelt at the wind-exposed spot, listening to tiny stones tick against each other while he searched for a broad base. Sunlight slid over the waterline rocks, and a faint spectrum glittered whenever a wave drew back with a hollow slap. He set the chosen slab down, and the river kept its gentle murmur. A nearby tower, once tall, rattled; several stones rolled downhill, one lodging against Finn’s base and tilting it sideways. He tried nudging the intruder away, but gravel scraped beneath his knee and the half-built stack groaned, then leaned.
Finn steadied himself, pressed feet wider, and lifted the tower stone by stone, each lift sending a dry hiss through the pile. The boulder beside him acted as a silent fixture; its sun-warmed face released faint crackles that mingled with the wind. Lily, stacking her own column upstream, heard the clatter and stepped over, a folded blanket swinging from her elbow. They crouched together just as another stray stone clinked toward them; Lily halted it with the blanket’s edge, fabric whispering against rock. Finn had been wearing a small wrist brace, built as assistive technology. The quiet whirr guided his palm back to the tilted slab. Together, they levered the base stone forward until grit squealed and the foundation lay flat again, though the stack still wobbled. Wind rushed past, carrying the river’s low drone beneath its rush, yet the tower remained upright for the first time.
Minutes later, another column collapsed higher up; pebbles pinged downhill, and one bumped Finn’s foundation, nudging the lowest layer. Lily reacted first, sliding the thick blanket under the leaning side; the cloth muffled the roll and held the tower steady. Finn then turned a wet stone until its heavier edge faced inward, and he eased it onto the middle tier, adding counterweight. Water hissed against the shore, gulls barked upstream, and the riverbank filled with a shifting chorus of taps and sighs. A family downstream burst into sudden laughter, a distant cheer that reminded Finn of a quiet celebration awaiting if balance held. He was reaching for a final pebble, breath paused while every small sound circled the unfinished tower.
Translation
