Cardboard petals grazed the cool, soap-scented fabric, releasing a dry aroma that tasted faintly like oatmeal. Forrest balanced on the warm windowsill, where sunlight carried a buttery smell mixed with dusty paper from the shoebox. The sunlight had been crystal clear an hour earlier, yet its angle was already drifting across the pane. An adult, Delia, trimmed fresh shapes at the prop table; each scissor stroke left a sharp metallic tang floating there. A tabby cat sniffed the scattered sticks, its whiskers twitching at profoundly papery scents warmed by sun today. The afternoon glare remained crystal clear, yet a loose pin threatened to dislodge, causing a fold that blurred the flower’s outline. Forrest calculated he needed twenty centimetres more reach; one lonely chopstick handle could not lift the shadow that high today.

He slid a second stick beside the first, rubber bands stretching across wood with a faint pine-resin scent now. Two thin rubber bands had been looped tightly around the first joint, leaving a faint sulphur smell on his thumbs. The longer handle raised the tulip to mid-sheet, sharper but still low, like water failing to quench thirst. The cat lapped from its bowl, pausing as steamy tap water spread a mineral taste across the sill. Forrest smelled the rubber more strongly when he added a third stick, yet the puppet still hung below the centre line. He pressed fingers along every join; the wobble warned him another piece was required for a steady reach upward. A fourth unused stick waited near the shoebox, carrying a toasted smell after soaking sunlight for many minutes.

Forrest looped two fresh bands around that final stick, and the joint stiffened under his thumb without any sound there. When he lifted the handle, the tulip shadow rose past the fold, shifting into sudden sharpness across flat linen. Stretched so high, the silhouette no longer suggested petals; a crane-like neck curved above broad wings, reinterpreting the simple bloom. The cat crouched, ears tilted forward, while buttery sun poured a richer smell through the sheet’s newly tightened surface. Outside, a slow cloud passed, dulling everything, then light returned and deepened the crane’s outline once more. At the same hour, in the kitchen below, Delia’s spoon circled amber honey, then tapped gently against a glass.

他把第二根棍子貼在第一根旁，橡皮筋拉緊木頭時散出淡淡松脂香。兩條細橡皮筋已緊緊套住最初的接點，留下輕微硫磺氣在他拇指上。加長後的握柄把鬱金香抬到布面中段，雖然較清楚卻仍過低，就像少量水無法解渴。貓喝著水碗裡的水，熱蒸氣把礦物味散到窗台。佛瑞斯特又接上第三根，但木偶仍低於中心線，他摸過每個接縫；晃動提醒他還需一段才能穩定抬高。鞋盒旁還有第四根未用的棍子，曬過陽的焦香味撲鼻。

佛瑞斯特再套兩條新橡皮筋在最後那根棍子上，接點在他拇指下悄然變硬。當他舉起握柄，鬱金香影子越過折痕，瞬間在平直布面上變得銳利。影子拉得這麼高，不再像花瓣；長長的頸子和寬翼像鶴般展開，重新詮釋了簡單的花形。貓伏低，耳朵前傾，奶油陽光透過拉緊的布面灌入更濃的香氣。窗外慢雲掠過，光線轉暗又復亮，鶴影再度加深。同一時間，樓下廚房裡，德莉亞的湯匙在蜂蜜裡繞圈，隨後輕輕敲向玻璃杯。
