“The chair is wobbly,” Luna said.
The hydraulic pedal hissed as she nudged the steel-grey base across the pale tiles toward the mirror station. She edged closer to tighten the damp cape strap herself, while the stylist trimmed another client a chair away. The narrow space between hanging cords and drifting capes pressed her elbows inward, and her motion brushed a row of shampoo testers. Each small bottle rocked like a slow drumbeat, yet Luna kept working because the strap had twisted under the moist fabric. The clip had been set too loosely during the rinse, so she tugged once and felt faint progress.
A loud gurgle from the water dispenser beside the waiting seats sliced through the steady dryer hum. Yara, flipping a glossy magazine that pictured a bustling street lifestyle, lifted one eyebrow at the puddle forming below the tap. Luna hurried to the basin alcove for a towel; weaving around cables proved time-consuming because damp capes narrowed the corridor. While she was away, the leaning tester tipped, nudged its neighbour, and the plastic column slid forward against the blow-dryer cord. Tension along the cable swung the dryer, its nozzle striking a spray bottle that rolled from the tray onto the chair lever. The seat dropped with a muted thud, and the slackened cord pulled its plug free, stopping further movement in silence.
Luna returned, pressed the towel over the puddle, and noticed her chair sitting lower while testers lay scattered like silver dominoes. She climbed aboard, and the fresh angle let her shoulders drop; using both thumbs, she tightened the strap without strain. What had seemed time-consuming moments earlier now finished quickly, and a steady mindset paced her measured movements. Behind the basin wall at that hour, the heater clicked off; lukewarm water slid along a hidden pipe toward the basins.
Translation
