English Original
Four pale call-number slips lay flat beneath the desk lamp; a fifth still curled halfway out of the printer slot. Nadia reached for the loose strip, aiming to copy its code before the shelving cart closed her target aisle. A steady stream of chilled air from the ceiling vent caught the paper, sending a brief flutter along its edge. The slip sprang upward like a tiny flag, and her fingers closed on nothing but the fading sensation of cool breeze. She pressed the sheet flat, yet the current curved it again, hiding the final digit behind a stubborn fold. If the vent had blown a little harder, the slip might have sailed completely across the reading table.
Her elbow nudged a tall glass vase that held decorative reeds; their thin stems swayed and struck the lamp’s metal arm. The tap sent a jolt through the desk. A small stack of pamphlets toppled and slid toward the carpet in slow sheets of blue-grey paper. Dust lifted from the lamp in a faint plume, hanging in the fluorescent light like smoke from cold chalk. Nadia paused; the same breeze that had betrayed her now pushed the drifting dust sideways, pressing it flat against the printer frame. Her gaze traced the dust as it stuck, then shifted to the stiffest reed protruding beyond the vase rim. She pulled the reed free. Its length, earlier an obstacle, now bridged the vent stream and pinned the curling slip against the desk. The digits stayed visible long enough for her pencil to score them onto the margin of her notebook. The slip that had been half-printed now lay flat beside its four companions, held in place by the single reed. Above the table, the unfinished plume of dust drifted slowly toward the ticking clock near the window.
Translation
