A second trowel was already scooping near the sandbox wall, scattering neat arcs of sand across the rubber mat. Joy paused, then chose the far corner, planning a broad castle that needed perfectly dry grains for crisp towers. The upper layer had been dried by the midday sun, but two inches down the sand turned dark and sticky. The heavy clump clung to the shovel, refused to tumble, and blocked her bucket like thick dough inside a spoon. She had tried to shake, tap, and scrape the rim, yet the mass stayed welded by its own cool moisture. A moment later, the sticky lump slipped free only to spread across her palm, leaving her project stalled.
Wind swept over the playground, lifting dry grains from her partly built wall and raining them onto Fraser’s digging area. His trowel lifted, and a small glass bead the color of deep sapphire rolled onto the wooden frame between them. Both children watched the brilliant speck tumble, its bright surface flashing each time the rope net above swayed in afternoon light. Joy compared the bead’s smooth shine with the rough paste on her shovel, then let her fingers test the clump again. The dense grains compressed together, holding shape much better than the drifting dry layer now blowing toward the slide. She pressed the sticky mass along the castle wall; Fraser copied, and the damp sand gripped the base like soft clay. Their shovels rose and fell in a slow rhythm, almost a ritual dance circling the growing mound.
To crown the tallest turret, Joy gently pressed the sapphire bead atop the moist peak, while Fraser packed extra damp sand beneath. The bead caught the amber sunlight and slowly glowed, turning the shared build into a unique experience neither wanted to hurry. Around them, other children moved between swings and ladders with the loose, shifting order of a sacred ritual. A pride of tiny plastic lions, half-buried earlier by Fraser, now guarded the castle entrance in stiff rows. Joy brushed stray grains from the handle, admired the tower again, then laid the blue shovel across the warm timber edge.
Translation
