English Original
Nina tipped a wooden scoop of glassy glaze chips into a tin pail, and the fragments clinked brightly together. The pottery stall rang with knocks as a vendor shifted bowls, a customer tested lids, and a cat flicked a dangling spoon. Nina aimed to reach one hundred fifty grams; the pail still hovered around sixty, according to the wobbly tabletop scale. She remembered the morning workshop where an instructor had mentioned those chips would melt into brilliant specks inside her clay whistle. Thinking of the whistle, she scooped, and a spray of shards rattled into the bucket, lifting the number to one hundred thirty. She paused to brainstorm a faster way; chips coated the counter like glittering sand, but her pail still needed twenty more grams.
She leaned forward, tapped the scoop against the rim, and a thin stream of leftover powder tinkled down like rain on tin. The scale's pointer slid past the red mark in a tick, releasing the brass balancing arm that had been propped beneath it. The arm sprang upward, grazed a hanging chime, and three ceramic disks rang in quick succession, the notes climbing like short ladders. The final disk bumped a row of bowls; each bowl rolled against the next, knocking out a drumbeat toward the lane entrance. A cart rattled over gravel then, its axle vibration shaking a crate sideways and halting the last bowl against a wooden corner. The sudden hush left only the faint ring of the chime swaying above Nina’s head.
Grandfather, busy comparing brush marks on a tall vase, glanced at the steady pointer and raised his eyebrows at the filled pail. Nina grinned, slipped a cork lid over the chips, and handed the crate vendor coins that chimed against the tin counter. The pail rattled against Nina’s knee while her grandfather’s whistle bobbed in his palm, both objects sending echoes down the gravel path.
Translation
