Trent dragged a strip of sandpaper along a narrow cedar plank, sending pale curls tumbling onto the worktable. He planned to pack the deepest groove of his picture frame with tight, springy shavings, yet the measuring spoon beside him showed only one-quarter of the needed volume. He braved the squeeze between benches, scooped the first pile into the spoon, and tipped it into a small copper tin. The shavings settled just below the halfway line while a grey tabby cat balanced on the windowsill, tail flicking above scattered discarded items waiting for recycling.
A second pass of the sandpaper produced another cloud. Trent guided the fresh tendrils toward the spoon, and cedar fragrance drifted across the warm lamplight. When he nudged the heap, a black beetle surfaced from beneath it and scuttled toward the floor. The cat sprang after the beetle; its back paw brushed a drying shelf. One glued corner piece wobbled, slid, and oozed a bead of glue. Trent lunged forward, lifted the plank edge, and blocked the drip with the tin. The sudden weight of both earlier spoonfuls and this new batch pressed together; the contents rose in one rounded mound that finally reached the spoon’s top rim. The frame now had enough filler, and the wobbling corner stopped short of falling.
By evening, the workshop lights were off and the wide doorway stood open to amber dusk. Fine dust lay over the ruler groove, and the tin of cedar curls rested beside the frame, its rim still showing the neat dome formed earlier. A faint line of dried glue marked where the corner piece had shifted, and the beetle’s tiny track curved across the dusty plank before vanishing under the supply bins. Nearby, the cat slept curled on a stack of scrap fabric, unmoving under the slow change of golden light into muted brown.
Translation
