"Rim on the pad," Otto murmured.
He pressed down, feeling the bowl’s warm foot compress the thin felt square under his thumbs. A soft thud drifted upward, too dull for a flawless piece. Otto had examined three bowls already; the reference tiles had been arranged by Ulric earlier, and their clear tones still rang in his memory like tidy notes. He slid a second felt square from the wrapping station, tucked it under the foot, then gave the glaze a quick tap with the wooden dowel. The sound brightened, yet the vibration stayed mixed, half-ping and half-thud. While Otto reached for a third pad, the touch rattled a straw bundle beside the reject bin. From that bundle a grey moth burst out, its wings brushing the table’s rough edge as if it were a distracted philosopher wandering between ideas.
The fluttering insect skimmed across the room and bumped the glass wall of a small desktop aquarium. Inside, a single goldfish spun away, stirring a quick whirl that slapped a spoon-size wave against the front pane. A bead of water leapt over the rim, arched through stale kiln-heated air, and landed on Otto’s wrist. He jolted, dropped the third pad, and watched in dismay as the felt square slid beneath two untouched cups. Before more water could escape, the goldfish calmed, and the wave fell back. Otto recovered the damp pad, blotted it against his apron, then chose to press down once more beneath the suspect bowl. Now three layers of felt raised the foot clear of the table’s grain; the next tap offered a single, bright note that hovered without fading.
Ulric, busy chalking numbers on the inventory board, paused at the sudden clarity; Otto nodded toward the bowl, already planning to calibrate the rest. A fine ring continued to shimmer through the wood, and dust above the shelf drifted slowly toward the open window.
Translation
