Each stroke removed silver dust, and the slurry thickened like slow paint, dulling the sound until it became a murmur. Finn paused to ladle fresh water, yet the bucket stood four steps away in sun-washed glare, delaying a quick rinse. He lowered the blade for another pass, judging the angle by the hair-thin silver line that winked along the edge.

A sudden puff of wind snapped the clipped newspaper free, and the strip skated beyond the awning with a flicker. Finn left the scissors resting on the wet stone and began an awkward amble across the path to catch the drifting sheet. The herb bed exhaled a peppery, almost tropical scent, and loose gravel pressed through his soles while he hurried after the paper. Behind him, heavy strokes from Thea’s whetstone made the neighbour’s pruning shears vibrate, then stagger forward tiny fractions. By the time Finn pinched the newspaper against a fence post, a dull clang rang out back at the bench.
