Nell drew the thread across the metal armrest and pinned it with her left thumb. Under the sudden pull, the strip of clear tape crinkled sharply against the warm metal surface. Warm weekend air drifted through the park, carrying lawn-mower scent beyond the distant swing sets. Pigeons began to gather around crumbs beside the paving stones like a slow, grey parade. Leander, who would handle the scissors later, read on a blanket a few steps away. The goal felt simple: finish a chevron band before lunchtime so it could circle Archie’s wrist tomorrow. Nell carefully formed three forward knots, yet the growing band curled to the right at the edge. That distorted curve clearly revealed how the left threads had tightened far beyond the neighbouring colours.
Frida slid onto the bench and bent close to the weaving, her elbows resting in the honey-coloured sunlight. Using low voices, they discussed why the stripe leaned, fingers hovering above the tightened rows while the threads hissed faintly. A dry breeze slipped between them, lifting the loose ends and peeling the tape corner so the anchor weakened. If Nell had kept pulling with the same force, the curve would have deepened until the bracelet twisted like a ribbon. Her curious glance drifted toward the sticker sheet resting quietly in the shade behind the supply bag. Next to the missing star, a tiny meerkat outline carried the same sandy colour as the caramel beads. Instead of undoing ten rows, they chose to insert a bead stripe that could hide the bend.
Frida held the strands apart, and Nell tipped the bead cup, guiding one copper bead along the central thread. Several beads rolled across the warm wood, tapping between narrow slats before one dropped into the grass below. Nell crouched, nudged the runaway bead with a twig, and flipped it into the cup before tension escaped. Together they tied three rows, sliding a caramel bead into each midpoint until the bracelet lay flat and balanced. Frida looped the band around Nell’s wrist, and the edges finally met smoothly without gaps. They packed the threads away, planning to add the meerkat sticker to the gift card later at home. By evening, orange light brushed the empty bench, turning the taped threads along the armrest muted dull gold. Beside the leg, the forgotten bead lay untouched in the grass, its glass surface catching a last stray glimmer.
